People Watching at Waterloo

Before I moved to the UK, I would always say “when I get there, I’m gonna go to Waterloo and people watch.”

I’m lucky these days to be able to pass through as frequently as I do now, always serving as a reminder of how long this journey has been and how far I’ve come.

In 2022, they installed the National Windrush Monument, just off the entry of the station, commemorating the British African-Caribbeans immigrants who came to the UK following WWII to help rebuild and fill labour shortages. The Windrush Generation. My grandparents' generation.

It’s fascinating to me this connection- that I feel so strong a pull to this station specifically, and to have had this memorial installed as a reminder of the journey my family took to get here.

It gives me chills sometimes!
