You Gotta Be Quicker Than That

I find it amusing that, as the day progresses, the photos I took at the outset are just absolute trash. In the moment, I thought, “hey, that’s pretty decent for just getting started!” They did not make the cut.

It snowed a little today (didn’t I say that it would?) and it was brief, but it mattered. It stole the show, I felt like a kid again.

Last I saw snow, I was up in North Yorkshire heading home after being on a construction site all day. By the time I got back, it was just too tired and too cold to do much else. I may have captured one twilight scene with my old iPhone to remember the moment. Perhaps I thought I would experience it again as I had no plans at that time to leave the North.

I always think I’ll be able to experience some things forever.

It has snowed in London before, but I’ve always “just” missed it. I do have one instance where I’m at King’s Cross station, boarding an LNER train. There must have been a few centimeters at the very front of the platform. Even the conductor got out before departure to just be in it.

The last time I really experienced snow in London was in 2021! I was living in West Kensington at the time and perched at my bay window, with my space heater.

I ran outside as soon as I saw that it started to stick. I have to dig out those photos, I’ve probably come a long way with my photography since then.

At lunch this time, aside from the snowfall, I headed to Borough Market- there’s always something to find, something to capture there. I’m well pleased with how the pictures came out. It can be a bit tricky really going after the feel of the place as you’re in it, but also trying not to capture people’s faces too much these days.

With exception, however, to a woman in a red coat that popped out against the cool of the glass panel. How very cool is she?

It’s becoming more and more apparent that just the simple fact that Big Cam is in my bag makes me look at things differently.

And today, I had to react a lot quicker than I normally do; between the snow falling and disappearing, messing with all my gloves and winter gear, and shuffling about in Borough Market, there were many moments that passed in too great an instant. You have to be so quick.

But if you trust your eye, trust your settings, and trust that it may be a decent edit, you’ll be alright.
